Learning to Splitboard the Northern Rockies
A 42-minute film and a series
Riding on Nature's Terms
Splitboarding is a fast-growing sport for snowboarders who want to venture out of the resorts and into the backcountry. A splitboard is a snowboard that splits in half and allows the snowboarder to cross-country ski into the mountains.
Snowboarding in the backcountry is an entirely different sport than snowboarding at a resort. A rider gets only a fraction of the runs because they have to earn every foot of ascent. On top of that, avalanches are a life-threatening factor.
If one is willing to take on these extra challenges they could be rewarded with the best deep-powder snowboarding that nature has to offer; you won't find these conditions at a ski resort.
Alex Maier has been snowboarding his whole life, but that was in the midwest. When he moves to Montana he has to start from scratch, this series shows what it takes to get into the backcountry safely and effectively.

Reviews
Anything this young man has produced about being outdoors (his hiking films represent a nice collection of unpretentious, well-directed masterpieces) is awesome and generally worth watching start to finish. This film is no exception - a plain-narrated documentary about learning to enjoy - and about enjoying, with lots of slope footage - the snow in winter mountains. Glad to be the first to review this film (and certain many others will follow with the solid fours and the deserving fives).
Great film. Pretty cool to see someone progress through the unknown like that. Quality narration and some very cool drone footage too.
Really good documentary about skiing on the mountains
Great series you have going here. I am just learning the whole splitboard thing and find your videos a great introduction and informative. Also, and just as interesting to me, is your skill at the videography and editing effects! Thanks.
