The Beartooth Mountains are the epitome of high alpine hiking in Montana. This route is designed to traverse the entire Beartooth Range while staying as high as possible. At the same time, the goal is to make the route hikable without any special mountaineering equipment. It’s almost entirely off-trail in very rugged terrain. You’ll be spending a lot of time boulder hopping on broken, sometimes loose, granite. You are going to encounter snow any time of the year, there may be times that you have to climb snow-covered slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Navigational experience is required on this route; this shouldn’t be your first experience finding your way in the mountains. If you feel comfortable with those challenges, and probably a few that aren’t mentioned, you’ll be rewarded with nearly 100 miles of incredible scenery that very few people get to see.
