The Big Snowies are a little known mountain range that juts up out of the plains of central Montana. Because they are further east and more isolated than just about any range in Montana, they have a very unique feel to them. The range is small enough that you are never surrounded by mountains. When on top of the Big Snowies you are looking down on fields. It’s a very special view. The mountains themselves are big but not very rugged. There is a flat high meadow across most of the range, making for easy hiking and easy navigation most of the time. There are just a couple of challenging parts in the terrain, a couple big climbs and one descent, referred to as “the crux”. Water is another challenge. The ridge is dry, so you’ll have some long water carries on this route. If you’re up for those challenges, then you’ll be treated with dreamlike mountaintop hiking and endless scenic camping opportunities.
