The North Absaroka Wilderness feels like a forgotten land, like you are stepping back in time, when the west was more wild. The wilderness area shares a border with Yellowstone National Park, and the wildlife from the park has no issue crossing that imaginary boundary, especially bears. I saw two black bears, a grizzly, elk, and bison. This was meant to be a “regular backpacking trip” not a high route. Although the 15-mile ridge section of this route felt like a high route. There is a surprising amount of climbing on the ridge and water is scarce. If you’re comfortable with the wildlife and the challenging ridge hiking, you’ll be rewarded with a truly wild landscape and a high level of solitude.
